If you’d ask most Indian fans, who’s the greatest captain? They’ll most likely say MS Dhoni. The wicketkeeper batter has made a name for himself as being one of the most tactically proficient players in cricket. How he reads the game is unparalleled. Not just fans, but most cricketers also chose Dhoni as the ultimate captain.

For others, Virat Kohli is the best. He changed India’s Test cricket team after taking over from Dhoni. It was under him, and pacers flourished. It was Kohli who also brought Jasprit Bumrah to the team. While Kohli wasn’t as astute as Dhoni, he was more aggressive and ambitious.

Rohit Sharma, Shashank Singh’s favourite captain

But for Shashank Singh, neither of these are the captains he’d like to play under. For Shashank, Rohit Sharma reigns supreme. His reasoning is rather simple. The all-rounder reckons that Rohit backs players more than any other captain. An example of this might be him persisting with Rishabh Pant in the 2024 T20 World Cup and Mohammed Shami in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Shashank also thinks that Rohit uses his brain as well as anyone else, and if you watch him on the field, he keeps the atmosphere cool and mellow.

“Everyone says that he (Rohit) backs his players to the hilt; gives them plenty of chances. He is a very smart captain. His one-liners (on the field) are also quite funny. If you ask me for one captain I would want to play under, it would be Rohit Sharma. He is from Bombay. I have also batted with him once. He was not the captain back then. I want to play under his leadership; that’s my wish,” Shashank Singh told Shubankar Mishra.
